James Morton Paton was born in the city of New York in 1863. He attended New York University from 1879 to 1883 and received his A.B. degree in 1883. Paton attended Harvard University from 1883 to 1887 (A.B. Harvard, 1884), studied at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, and was a Rogers fellow of Harvard from 1892 to 1893.
